Dawn Butler, Minister for Youth Engagement and Citizenship, in an official Government response to the independent Youth Citizenship Commission, has called on young people to take responsibility for their future and to tell politicians their ideas. |
An Agenda for Youth Engagement: Government response to the recommendations of the Youth Citizenship Commission, outlines the achievements of the Government in engaging young people through initiatives such as the Youth Opportunities Fund, the youth4u young inspectors programme and the MYPLACE programme. It sits alongside Join, the new youth citizenship information hub that is being launched on the Directgov website.
The document responds to the ideas and recommendations in the Final Report of the Youth Citizenship Commission, Making the connection Building youth citizenship in the UK. The Commission was created in 2008 to define what citizenship means to young people, to increase young people's participation in politics and promote active citizenship, reflecting the communication preferences of young people, and to lead a consultation on whether the voting age should be lowered to 16.
