Emily is a Senior Research Officer in the Northern Office. She leads qualitative and mixed-methods research and evaluation projects.

Prior experience and professional background

Emily joined the NFER in 2003. Prior to this Emily worked for Durham University and then the University of Newcastle as a research associate. Emily has a first class honours degree from Newcastle in combined studies (psychology, education and social policy) and is currently studying for an MSc in Social Research Methods.

Main research interests

Emily largely focuses on research into enhancing educational opportunities, particularly for disadvantaged groups. She has a longstanding interest in extended schools and a strong research background in children’s services. Her focus more recently has been on the provision of mental health services for children and young people; multiagency working; the narrowing the gap agenda; and enhancing access to higher education.

Other research interests

Emily has also been involved in research around teachers continued professional development, the arts and creativity, school leadership and school funding.

Emily is currently part of the Vulnerable Children’s Thematic Interest Group and is the Northern Office representative on the Foundation’s Methodology Working Group.
