Assessment for Learning (AfL)

In 2008, NFER investigated what Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies are most applicable to science teaching and learning and how these are implemented by teachers across England.

An internally-funded research project was carried out at NFER to investigate AfL practices and benefits in primary science. The research involved a literature review to find out what AfL strategies are most applicable to science teaching and learning and a teacher questionnaire survey to find out if and how these strategies are being implemented by teachers across England.

The research found that AfL has clear benefits for pupils, and that teachers are aware of AfL and are implementing a range of strategies in their science teaching.

We also made recommendations for maximising AfL’s benefits in the primary science classroom.
