Curriculum assessments

Curriculum assessments

Engaging stimulus materials and good question writing are at the heart of any test development process. NFER develops robust, engaging tests and innovative assessment materials across a range of curriculum areas, with unrivalled expertise in the core subjects of English, mathematics and science for key stages 1-3.

NFER’s assessment researchers are highly experienced in sourcing engaging stimulus materials and writing appropriate questions for a range of tests, tasks and other curriculum assessments. Many have teaching experience.

Our research teams are involved in national curriculum test development and international survey research (PIRLS, PISA and TIMSS).

Our test development and question writing expertise is based on the best national and international practice, is rooted in research and understanding of assessment theory and practice, and takes into account the needs of teachers.

Our extensive experience in this area enables us to create many different types of questions. These include questions that can be marked very simply and others for which detailed and exemplified mark schemes are required.

Our work is rooted in close scrutiny of pupils’ responses during the development cycle and the statistical analysis of data obtained during our work with schools.
