Literacy assessment

NFER has unparalleled experience in the assessment of children’s literacy skills through both tests and tasks. A team of assessment researchers with expertise in English language and literacy, primary and lower secondary education, psychology and assessment theory and practice, works on a wide range of projects.

NFER has been closely involved with England’s national curriculum English assessment since its inception in the 1990s. In addition to the national key stage 1 and 2 tests, and optional tests, we also work with publishers to develop and standardise some of the most widely used reading and writing tests in this country.

Our work is informed by other assessment research including literature reviews, international surveys and the evaluation of literacy initiatives. We also have a strand of research into assessment for learning in literacy, and into marking reliability.
