Expert guides help teachers get to grips with primary curriculum change

The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has launched two suites of practical guides to bring teachers quickly up to speed with the new primary National Curriculum. The guides are designed to help teachers understand the impact of the changes on lesson plans and assessments, and how to make these work within the tight constraints of schools’ budgets.
Practical Guides to the 2014 National Curriculum is a set of guides to help teachers quickly review the new primary programmes of study. Developed by NFER experts experienced in working with national curriculum frameworks, three of the volumes cover the core subjects, and the fourth covers the new approach to measurement. Each of the three core subject guides:
Compares the statutory requirements of the old and new curricula side by side
Helps in identifying, by year, what is expected of each pupil in the new curriculum
Has colour coding to identify easily the additions in the new curriculum as well as what has been removed from the disapplied curriculum
Has extension sections for specialists and subject leaders on how you might prepare for the new curriculum.

Practical Guides to Assessing Writing at key stage 2 provide guidance to help teachers reliably assess any writing task, with particular emphasis on grammar. There is no need for schools to buy new tasks and mark schemes – these guides will help teachers work with the new curriculum while still using the resources in use in school, saving time and money.
identify specific features to look for when assessing pupils’ writing, aligned to the new curriculum and focusing on grammar, with easy-to-use colour coding;
help teachers assess a pupil’s work, providing evidence to map progress and inform target-setting;
provide examples of pupils’ writing to assist in moderation;
provide next steps on how to address identified issues and improve pupils’ writing.
There are separate guides for lower and upper key stage 2 and each guide covers two text types. The paired text types will help teachers target compositional features particular to specific text types whilst strategically assessing grammatical features across different types of writing.
