National Foundation for Educational Research appoints new Chair of Board of Trustees

24 April 2017

The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), a leading independent research organisation, is delighted to announce the appointment of Lorna Cocking as Chair of the NFER Board of Trustees.

Lorna, who is a current Trustee on the Board, will succeed Richard Bunker as Chair with effect from 1 May 2017, following Richard’s retirement from the Board.

Having spent the first 17 years of her career as a classroom teacher in Norway, Canada, Finland and England, Lorna has a wealth of experience in the education sector. This includes her positions as Publishing Director and then Director of Education at Pearson Education from 1993 to 2010. She was also a member of the CBI’s Education and Training Council from 2003 to 2007, served on the Board of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust from 2009 to 2012, and chaired the Council of the Girls’ Day School Trust from 2007 to 2014. She is currently Chair of the Board of Governors of Kent College, Chair of the Board of the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools, and Pro-Chancellor of Middlesex University.

Commenting on her new appointment, Lorna said: “I am delighted to be taking up this role at what is an exciting time for NFER. I look forward to building on NFER’s success and to supporting our very talented and experienced team of experts in working to improve education for all children and young people.”

Richard Bunker added: “It has been a privilege to serve as chair of the NFER Board of Trustees and to have the opportunity to work alongside the staff of the NFER during a very busy period in the Foundation’s development. The Foundation has taken great strides forward during this time and the whole team can take pride in its achievements. I will miss the expert team at NFER but I know I leave them in the very capable hands of my successor, Lorna Cocking, who is well known in the education sector.”
