NFER welcomes Government response to primary school assessment and accountability consultation

The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) welcomes the Department for Education’s (DfE) long-awaited response to the primary school assessment and accountability consultation.

In particular we welcome the emphasis on the measurement of progress rather than solely attainment at the end of primary education, enabled by a new baseline assessment.

As developers of the original Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, we recognise the importance of the sensitive assessment of young children, and how this information can be used to inform teaching and learning in the vital early years.

The announcement that detailed performance descriptions based on the new curriculum will be developed goes some way to meeting our concerns about the loss of a common language of assessment with the removal of the level descriptions.

Liz Twist, NFER’s Head of Assessment, said “We look forward to continuing to work with the profession as teachers make this transition to the new curriculum and assessment arrangements.”
