Raising Standards of Literacy and Numeracy in UK Schools

Research Director Ben Styles will be giving a keynote address to this forum on the work of the NFER Education Trials Unit, providing advice to teaching practitioners on using research to identify the interventions best placed to improve their learners’ literacy and numeracy.
Ben is the Head of NFER’s Education Trials Unit, which has conducted Randomised Control Trials (RCTs) on a number of literacy and numeracy interventions for organisations including the Education Endowment Foundation. NFER's recent evaluation of the ‘Improving Numeracy and Literacy’ trial was awarded five 'padlocks', the first ever randomised controlled trial (RCT) to achieve this top rating of research quality from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
