Governance and Structure
Alan runs his own consultancy in education policy and management specialising in professional development and executive coaching. He has an MA in Education from the London University Institute of Education.
Alan started his career in the voluntary sector, working with students from abroad before moving into local government in the 1980s. He worked at the Association of County Councils (ACC) and then for Surrey County Council, joining the Association of Metropolitan Authorities (AMA) as Education Officer in 1992. During this time he was also involved in part-time further and adult education, including five years as a tutor for the Open University. His full time career culminated as Director of Education for the London Borough of Ealing in 2002.
Alan served as President of the Society of Education Officers in 2002. The Society subsequently became the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS), where he remains an active associate member. Until recently he also served as a tribunal judge within the Office of the Schools Adjudicator. He is currently a member of Examination Procedures Review Service at OFQUAL and a trustee of two other education charities.
He has a long-term association with NFER which started in 1984 during his time at the Association of County Councils. He has been a Trustee and Board member since 2002.
