Bethan is the National Research Co-ordinator for the European Survey on Language Competences (ESLC) and also works on other international surveys including PISA and TIMSS. She has been responsible for the translations and cultural adaptation of test items and questionnaires and has been involved in organising both computer-based and paper-based marking of constructed response items, maths and science items for TIMSS and maths and reading items for PISA. She co-wrote the TIMSS 2007 and PISA 2009 national reports. As well as her international work, Bethan has experience of designing and developing assessment and quantitative and qualitative research materials for a range of purposes and clients.
Bethan has worked on a variety of assessment and research projects ranging from the development of classroom activities to aid teachers’ assessments of speaking and listening skills, to leading the development and standardisation of a group reading test for 6 – 16 year olds. Other projects have involved the moderation of the Foundation Stage Profile, and a research project for the DfE examining the issues surrounding the transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1. Bethan has a BSc in psychology and an MSc in occupational psychology. She is a practitioner of AEA-Europe (Association of Educational Assessment). Her main interests lie in international comparisons, assessment, literacy and early year’s education.
