Claire has experience of managing a variety of test development and research projects and is currently the project director for the development of the National Reading Tests in Wales, for use with learners in years 2-9. She has recently led an evaluation project to investigate whether cycle training improves a child’s ability to assess and appropriately respond to on-road hazards. This involved the development of an on-screen test of hazard perception. Previous work includes managing the development of Key Stage 2 English tests (England) and the evaluation of a literacy intervention programme.
Claire has experience of both qualitative and quantitative research methods including item writing for paper-based and on-screen assessments, informal trialling, marker training, questionnaire development, data analysis and literature reviews. Her assessment research includes developing reading tests for level 6 pupils in Key Stage 2; developing optional assessment materials for reading and writing for pupils in years 3, 4 and 5; and devising teaching activities and materials to support Assessment for Learning (AfL) in literacy. She has also carried out a review of AfL in primary science and developed formative e-assessment tests in science.
Claire is a former primary teacher and has Practitioner status with AEA-Europe.
