David joined the Centre for Assessment at NFER in September 2014. He has worked on a wide range of Science and Maths projects across the age ranges with roles covering all stages of test development from writing and reviewing of specific items to test construction and the analysis and evaluation of test instruments. David has worked on developing NFER’s KS2 Maths assessments as well as a suite of KS3 Science materials. He has worked on the marking and moderation of the science component for the 2015 PISA tests for Scotland, as well as the PISA-based Test for Schools project in England and Wales. David’s current role is as the Maths subject lead for delivery of the Ofqual National Reference Tests for KS4.
David’s academic background is based in practical science. After a Biology degree from Oxford, he completed a PhD in Cancer Research from the University of Birmingham and post-doctoral research at King’s College London. He then moved into teaching as a secondary science teacher, with a focus on A-level Biology. He has curriculum experience with three years as Head of Biology at a large comprehensive school, and subsequently held a whole school CPD co-ordinator role with responsibilities including coaching, sharing best practice and action research. This role contributed to the award of the NFER Research Mark to the school. David’s interests span science education and curriculum development as well as using research to deliver impact into classrooms.
