Joana is a Quantitative Researcher in the Centre for International Education. She is currently working on further analysis of Northern Ireland TIMSS data and her past projects include data analysis for the 2017 Selective and Top Comprehensive Schools report for the Sutton Trust.
Prior to joining NFER, Joana completed a PhD in Mathematics at Imperial College London, where she was also a Grace Chisolm Young Research Fellow. Alongside her academic research activities, she also worked for 4Change in Lisbon, a Portuguese consultancy that focuses on social impact. Here, her work included the application of statistical and quantitative methodology to social return on investment (SROI) analysis.
Joana also worked as a subcontractor from 2014 to 2016 for UNICEF in Angola.This work involved the design of data collection tools and the application of statistical and quantitative methods, with the aim of identifying the profiles of children at risk of school drop-out or exclusion, as well as the main social, cultural and economic factors affecting school drop-out and exclusion.
