Liz oversees all assessment research and development projects in the Foundation, including NFER’s own assessment products and work for clients. She has directed a large number of assessment development projects, primarily in the area of literacy, and many on a national scale. This includes the key stage 2 tests in English between 1997 and 2012, taken by all 11-year-olds in England. She currently leads the development, trialling and delivery of national tests in reading and numeracy for the Welsh Government. She has also undertaken work in assessment for learning and other assessment research, in particular looking at access arrangements / accommodations.
Between 2001 and 2013 she was the National Research Coordinator for the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), an international comparative survey of the reading skills of 9-10-year-olds.
Liz has a wide range of teaching experience including as deputy headteacher of a combined school, establishing and managing an integrated department for children with learning difficulties, and working in a secondary special school.
