Matt is a Research Manager in NFER’s Centre for Evaluation and Consultancy. Based in NFER’s York Office, Matt has over 13 years’ experience of designing and conducting quantitative and qualitative research projects. Matt is highly skilled at developing and delivering research solutions to meet individual client’s needs.

He is currently leading a project for the Department for Education (DfE) to evaluate the impact of teacher pay reform for the local authority (LA) maintained sector. The main purpose of the study is to track schools’ progress with implementing the pay reforms, to understand resulting changes in schools’ behaviour in relation to pay award and progression, and to identify areas of best practice.

Matt is also the Dissemination and Impact Lead for NFER’s delivery of PISA 2018. The project is being delivered in the UK by NFER on behalf of the DfE, the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government, and the Department of Education in Northern Ireland.

Matt is an advocate for the increased use of evidence in education. He is a member of CEBE, and recently authored the report: ‘Insights into the Role of Research and Development in Teaching Schools’.

Matt holds a BSc (Hons) in Geography and an MRES in Environment and Development (with Distinction), both from Lancaster University.
