In Spring 1990, the Department of Education and Science (DES) commissioned NFER to conduct a survey of the provision of school visits and activities, and policies for charging for these, in schools throughout England. The focus of the research was the new legislation on charging contained in the ERA and the impact this may have had on provision. This report presents the findings of the study. It comprises quantitative information from a questionnaire survey of heads, a supplementary school schedule of visits which heads were also asked to complete, a questionnaire survey of LEAs and follow-up interviews with heads which were intended to illuminate the responses given in the questionnaires.
