Key competences in the curriculum

Based on input to a Eurydice Network comparative study on key competences in the school curriculum in education systems across Europe, Eurydice at NFER has produced a suite of reports showing how the school curriculum and assessment frameworks in England, Wales and Northern Ireland support the development of key competences.

These competences cover:

  • English (or Irish or Welsh)/literacy/reading
  • mathematics/numeracy
  • science
  • modern foreign languages
  • digital competence/ICT
  • social and civic competence (including sex and relationships education and citizenship)
  • and initiative, entrepreneurship and enterprise education

The reports also summarise current and recent initiatives to improve learning in these areas.

The text was completed in summer 2012, with some subsequent additions to the ‘reforms’ section.
