This study, based upon findings of research undertaken in schools during 1997-1998, sets out to explore the influence of class size on classroom practice and on pupils' learning as well as its effect on the workload of teachers. It also explores the implications of selective class size reduction for the management of schools and the organisation of classes and teaching groups.
