Qualitative research exploring the perceptions of higher education and higher and degree apprenticeships of young people in Essex

The National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) is a national programme consisting of 29 local consortia aiming to rapidly increase the number of young people from underrepresented groups progressing into higher education (HE). Make Happen, the NCOP consortia based in Essex, has commissioned NFER to explore the views of local young people and teachers towards higher education and higher and degree apprenticeships. The findings from the study will help steer Make Happen’s future engagement with schools in Essex and inform their process evaluation.

The research involves visits to 7 schools and colleges to interview staff and undertake focus groups with students in years 10 and 12. Additionally we will run two focus groups with undergraduates. Research questions will focus on students’ future aspirations and their views on higher education and Make Happen activities.
