Textbooks are a major resource for teachers in all countries and they are therefore likely to have significant influence on student learning. Despite this, little research has been conducted on their characteristics and role in the classroom until relatively recently. This booklet summarises the contribution of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to this growing area of enquiry into factors affecting teaching and learning.
