Carole Willis, NFER Chief Executive gave a keynote presentation at 11:30am, at this event hosted by Havering Education Services, in partnership with EES for Schools. The event was open to all Senior Leaders and Business Managers and provided delegates with the opportunity to listen to inspirational keynote speakers in education. Carole presented on the teacher supply issue and how to improve teacher retention.
Ensuring there are enough teachers in our classrooms is one of the most important challenges currently facing our education system. NFER has consistently argued that greater attention needs to be given to improving teacher retention, not just recruitment. This session drew on NFER’s extensive research on this issue, identifying some of the key factors associated with teachers’ decisions to leave the profession and what school leaders and policy makers can do to improve retention. It touched on the some of the unintended consequences of accountability systems, in other countries as well as in England, and the need to develop an accountability system which avoids excessive workload for teachers whilst ensuring school performance is judged fairly.
