The Big Evidence Debate took place in Durham on Tuesday 4 June 2019. Looking at the contribution that meta-analysis and randomised control trials make to understanding what works in education. The discussions seeked to address some of the important challenges and explore what the profession has learned from the use of this evidence.

NFER’s Research Director Dr Ben Styles took part in a panel discussion ‘is meta-analysis the best we can do’. Joining him on the panel were Professor Steve Higgins, Professor Nancy Cartwright and Professor Catherine Hewitt. The session started at 10.15am, looking at the best approaches to synthesising research findings.

Other panel discussions included: ‘Where is the value in meta-analysis in education’ and ‘Don’t do meta-analysis’, or ‘Do it more carefully’, plus Larry Hedges and Dylan Wiliam gave the keynote speeches.
