PISA in Scotland

Around 120 schools in Scotland were invited to take part in PISA 2015. The PISA 2015 field trial took place in Scotland in March 2014 and the main survey happened in March 2015.

How are schools and students chosen to participate in PISA 2015?

  • All areas and all types of school are included, to give a representative sample.
  • Schools are randomly selected by the international team which runs the survey.
  • A sample of students in the age group will be randomly chosen to take part.

What did students need to do?

  • Students answered questions on science, plus questions on reading, maths or collaborative problem solving.
  • They also answered some questions on their background and on their attitudes and experiences.
  • The survey took place at their school, during normal school hours.
  • There was no need for any special preparation or studying.

Schools do not need to administer or collect the tests and questionnaires. A trained PISA administrator brings everything to the school and runs the session. All marking was done by NFER.
