The Comparative Reading Survey carried out in 1991 by NFER provides fresh evidence that the reading performance of children aged 7-8 in England has fallen between 1987 and 1991, although not uniformly in all schools, some of which have maintained or improved performance. The report will be of interest to everyone concerned about the levels of literacy in this country and their implications for the future.
