This is the first of two reports arising from an NFER project which concentrates on the role of the LEA in reducing truancy and raising school attendance. It relays findings from the initial telephone survey of this project which focuses on the areas of work of Education Welfare Services in over 100 LEAs and the services and agencies with which they liase, as well as current initiatives and their effectiveness in improving attendance. The report should be relevant to policy-makers and practitioners, as well as those researching in the area of truancy and school non-attendance.
