University of Bristol Teacher Observation

Project director: Ben Styles
Project leader: Jack Worth
Sponsor: Education Endowment Fund (EEF)
End date: April 2017

This research is evaluating the impact of a teacher peer observation intervention, which uses bespoke software, being delivered by the Centre for Market and Public Organisation (CMPO), University of Bristol and the Institute of Education (IOE) in maths and English departments in secondary schools.

This is a randomised controlled trial (RCT) where schools have been randomly allocated to either an intervention group using the observation intervention or a control group continuing with their normal observations. In addition, teachers in intervention schools are going to be randomly allocated to either be observers, observees or both. Finally, maths and English departments will be randomly allocated to either a ‘high’ or ‘low’ dose of the observation.

Methodology

The impact evaluation will examine the impact of the intervention on maths and English attainment at the end of year 10 and 11 from July 2015 and July 2016.

The process evaluation will include: an online survey of teachers, case study visits to six schools to interview teachers and senior management, a review of training materials and records on observations and usage.
