Supported marking service for Year 2-9 Numerical Reasoning Tests 2017, Wales

What are the purposes and aims of the service?

On behalf of Welsh Government, NFER is aiming to support and develop teacher expertise in numerical reasoning by implementing a supported marking service which gives schools access to high quality support with their test marking. This support will consist of marking sessions for schools, consortia training events and post-event email support for practitioners attending sessions, to handle any enquiries through to the end of the marking period.

The purpose of the service is to embed expertise in marking numerical reasoning tests within schools across Wales, and give schools ownership of test outcomes.

Who is sponsoring NFER to carry out this work?

The Welsh Government

Who can attend the marking sessions?

All maintained schools in Wales with students in year 7, 8 and 9 are eligible to send practitioners to the supported marking sessions. Independent, PRU and special schools will also be invited to attend a session. PRUs and special schools will be eligible to send one teacher to these sessions. Independent schools can attend the sessions at a cost.

Do schools have to take part?

All Welsh secondary schools are encouraged to attend a supported marking session. These events will provide live script marking with support and guidance from an expert marking team comprising numeracy specialists, and offer practitioners support with undertaking high volumes of marking in a short timescale. However, attendance is not compulsory.

Why should I take part?

Schools will receive a payment for attendance at the supported marking sessions, and individual practitioners will be able to claim for expenses incurred in travelling to the sessions directly from NFER. The sessions provide access to continuing professional development and give practitioners the opportunity to gain further expertise in marking. The face-to-face, online and continual support offered to practitioners throughout the marking period reinforces the validity of test data collected.

How do I register to attend?

The supported marking sessions are being held from 10am to 3.30pm at the following dates and locations.

Friday 5 May

Principality Stadium, Cardiff

Tuesday 9 May

Venue Cymru, Llandudno

Thursday 11 May

Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli

Saturday 13 May

Cardiff City Stadium, Cardiff

Tuesday 16 May

Glasdir, Llanrwst

Please use the online registration form sent to your school to book the recommended number of delegates to their preferred session(s). Schools will need to provide contact details for the practitioners attending, their preferred language for delivery, as well as preferred choice of event. Further information about the marking sessions will be sent to individual practitioners once they have registered their attendance.

How do I need to prepare for the supported marking sessions?

We would encourage all attendees to familiarise themselves with the markscheme for the year group(s) they will be marking prior to the session; this will ensure you get the most out of the session. We would encourage you to bring as many test papers as you can to the event; in previous sessions, attendees have marked between 80-200 scripts at each session.

How will NFER use and protect the registration data collected?

NFER will ensure that participants’ data is processed securely, and their confidentiality respected. We have well-established procedures and monitoring in place to obtain, process, analyse, archive and eventually dispose of data in a secure manner. We ensure that our staff and partners are aware of the importance of data security and operate within the provisions of the 1998 Data Protection Act.
