Early childhood education

NFER has contributed to understanding early years policy and practice through a portfolio of studies. These include research into fundamental issues, such as the age of starting school and the impact of season of birth on attainment and other outcomes.

We have also studied early years transition, curriculum and staffing.

One of our reviews looked at the influence of season of birth on outcomes in other countries and found that the youngest in the year group (summer-borns in the UK) did least well. There was limited evidence to support any specific educational policies, apart from age-adjusted tests.
