Schools, teachers and the core curriculum

Our researchers have expertise spanning the entire primary and secondary school age range. We have specialists in the core subjects of English, mathematics and science and a strong track record in researching school leadership, governance and the development of the whole-school workforce.

Current policy highlights the importance of skilled teachers and expert school leaders. Examples of our research in this area are leadership within City Challenge schools, the Gaining Ground school improvement strategy and investigations of specialist teachers and professional standards.

A particular area of specialism is the STEM group of subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Our STEM team has undertaken a series of projects evaluating initiatives to improve take-up of these subjects in schools. Other research studies have investigated teacher development and mentoring in STEM subjects.

We have a portfolio of literacy research which includes our often-cited surveys of children’s attitudes to reading, together with evaluations of literacy improvement initiatives.
