Data collection

NFER has extensive experience in working with schools and others involved in education to collect data and produce robust datasets for a range of purposes. We support NFER’s range of research projects by providing data collection services and we also provide this service to external clients who may wish to have support for their own projects.

We have a strong track record in data collection. For example, we carried out the national data collections of the years 3, 4 and 5 optional tests on contract to QCDA from 2009-2011.  Prior to that NFER carried out the national data collections of years 3, 4 and 5 optional tests on contract to QCA and NAA each year from 1999 to 2007, including analysis of the data and the production of statistical progression charts.  NFER also carried out data collections of the years 7 and 8 optional tests on contract to QCA and NAA each year from 2002 to 2006 and again in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

We have a dedicated team of research staff who are expert in survey administration and data collection.  We have our own data capture unit and we have a team of specialist Data Analysts who support the production of data from source to final output.

We handle paper and electronic data. Our data capture unit uses scanning technology to capture paper based data in a very fast and efficient way.  Our data analysts are skilled in the use of SPSS to collate, clean and match data.

NFER works to a strict Data Security Policy covers the range of information assurance topics, including secure data protection, the security of the NFER's computing infrastructure, the physical security of NFER’s office locations, regulations for working away from the office, and confidentiality obligations for staff.
