Helping pupils return to school: strategies for improving attendance

As part of our study Voices from the classroom: Understanding how secondary schools support pupils returning from absence, we carried out interviews with school staff and focus groups with 85 pupils across nine mainstream secondary schools with strong or improving attendance.

While illness remains a leading cause of absence, pupils and staff also spoke about the impact of mental health needs, social dynamics, and changes in routine - all of which can make returning to school feel difficult. This research explores the approaches schools are using to help pupils feel supported, welcomed, and ready to re-engage.

To support schools with this, we’ve created a Research Bite and accompanying poster full of insights and practical strategies for supporting return and promoting attendance.
