The STEM Horizons Computer Science Partnerships programme aims to partner specialist computer science teachers from independent schools with state schools to offer an enhanced curriculum alongside enrichment, support and resources, with the aim of improving students’ attainment in GCSE Computer Science.
The evaluation aims to examine the impact of the programme and inform its future development and scaling.
This is an evaluation which will include comparison of GCSE Computer Science attainment in participating schools and a matched comparison group of schools, as well as perceptions of teachers and students who are involved with the programme, gathered via surveys and interviews.
The programme aims to involve up to 25 partner state schools within the localities and existing networks of participating independent schools. The partner state schools will have a need for specialist computer science teaching capacity and high proportions of students from low-income backgrounds.
Further information about what the evaluation involves for participating schools can be found in the School Information Sheet.
The evaluation will contribute to the evidence base on what works to improve Computer Science GCSE outcomes for students. If successful, it is hoped the programme will be expanded to more schools and to other STEM subjects in the future.
The evaluation will take place between September 2025 and March 2029. A detailed timeline of evaluation activities can be found in the School Information Sheet.
