Case Study: Lander Road Primary School

Lander Road Primary School in Sefton has been using NFER Tests since 2015 as part of its framework for teaching, learning and assessment. Headteacher, Mr Jeff Taylor, explains his reasons for choosing NFER:

“We’ve used NFER a number of times over the years and know that if it’s NFER, it’s got credibility behind it. When considering assessments for our school, others in the market didn’t seem quite as robust. Ultimately we wanted something to support and add weight to our own internal teacher assessments that would enable us to compare our children to children nationally.”


Lander Road Primary use their assessment data in numerous ways, not just to provide a snapshot of attainment but to feed into ongoing teaching strategies. Mr Taylor explains:

“The assessments enable us to identify any gaps for individuals or particular cohorts, which then allows us to plan for subsequent terms. In pupil progress meetings, teachers share their end of term assessments which are informed by the tests and we then use these to look at what support we need to put into place for individual children going forward. It helps us adapt how we use our  teaching assistants and is one of the tools we use to monitor the quality of teaching and learning across the school. If the data shows that there has been a dip in attainment in a particular class, we can  drill down to why that is and remediate.”

As well as using them to keep a watchful eye on teaching and learning in his school, Mr Taylor acknowledges the value of NFER Tests when dealing with external stakeholders, including Ofsted.

“I know that with NFER Tests the information we give to Ofsted is robust and they are more than happy with what we are doing in terms of assessment.” he says.
