While the Covid-19 pandemic eased the teacher supply challenge in the short term in England, the wider labour market resurgence since pandemic restrictions began lifting in 2021 means the longer-term pressure on teacher supply has resumed. The need to make teaching an attractive and rewarding graduate career choice is a policy priority once again.

At this event, we reveal the findings from the latest in our series of annual reports monitoring the key indicators and trends of teacher supply and working conditions in England, funded by the Nuffield Foundation. A panel of education experts then reflected on the findings and gave their thoughts and recommendations on what can be done to enhance teacher recruitment and retention. There was also an opportunity to ask the panellists questions.

Jack Worth (School Workforce Lead, NFER)
An expert on the school workforce, Jack has authored a number of NFER publications on the recruitment, retention and development of teachers in England and Wales. As an economist specialising in analysing a range of large datasets, he brings insight on the changing teaching profession to inform policy and practice.

Professor Samantha Twiselton (Director - Sheffield Institute of Education at Sheffield Hallam University)
Professor Samantha Twiselton is the Director of Sheffield Institute of Education at Sheffield Hallam University, Vice President (External) of the Chartered College of Teaching and Deputy Chair of Opportunity Area Partnership Board. She uses her research and practice in the progression of teacher expertise, and curriculum design to improve school embedded approaches to teacher development. Sam has been involved in influencing Government policy on teacher education and is the Chair of the DfE ITT Framework Group, a member of the DfE Teacher Recruitment and Retention Advisory Group, the specialist NPQs Group, the Carter Review of ITT and Expert Behaviour Management Panel, and the OFSTED Curriculum Review Panel. She is a recent recipient of an OBE for services to Higher Education.

Sufian Sadiq (Director of Teaching School, Chiltern Learning Trust)
Sufian Sadiq is the Director of Teaching School at Chiltern Learning Trust, with responsibility for overseeing two regional Hub areas in the South East of England. Chiltern Teaching School is one of the largest providers of CPD to the sector nationally. He is a passionate activist within the educational landscape around race, equity and inclusion. He is a Fellow and Board Member of the Chartered College of Teaching, as well as a Fellow for the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors. He plays an active role in numerous charitable organisations as a Trustee and also holds key governance roles within educational organisations.

Cassie Buchanan (Chief Executive Officer - The Charter Schools Educational Trust)
Cassie Buchanan is the CEO of The Charter Schools Educational Trust, a growing trust of secondary and primary schools in South London and prior to this, she was the headteacher of Charles Dickens Primary School which leads the Trust's partnership work. Cassie has represented schools on DFE advisory committees, including those linked to Early Years, flexible working, teacher wellbeing and workload. Cassie also represents schools, nurseries and colleges for one of London's Health and Wellbeing boards. Cassie has been an Ofsted inspector, is a National Leader of Education and was awarded an OBE for services to education in January 2021. She is passionate about supporting the sector to attract, grow and retain great teachers.

Jane Peckham (Deputy General Secretary, NASUWT)
Jane began her career as a primary teacher and taught for 16 years in schools across Glasgow and South Lanarkshire. In 1999, she left teaching to take up employment with the NASUWT in Scotland initially as a Recruitment Officer, then Caseworker and in 2006 was appointed as National Official (Scotland). As the General Secretary’s representative in Scotland, Jane’s remit was wide ranging covering all aspects related to Scottish education including education policy development, teachers’ pay and conditions and the wider trade union movement. In May 2021, Jane was appointed as NASUWT Deputy General Secretary. Jane strongly believes in the importance of the collective voice in ensuring the views of the profession are represented. She has been an active trade union member since her student days.
