2026 key stage 1 technical pre-test, key stage 2 technical pre-test and item validation trial

In 2026, NFER will be coordinating the delivery of four separate coding exercises on behalf of the Standards and Testing Agency (STA):

  • Key Stage 1 technical pre-test (KS1 TPT) in Mathematics
  • Key Stage 2 technical pre-test (KS2 TPT) anchor in English reading, GPS and mathematics
  • Key Stage 2 technical pre-test (KS2 TPT) main in English reading, GPS and mathematics
  • Key Stage 2 item validation trial (KS2 IVT) in English reading.

This page provides information for those wishing to apply to become a coder or supervisory coder for these exercises.

These trials are aimed at testing the performance of individual questions at key stage 1 and key stage 2.

Schools will be randomly selected by STA and make up a nationally representative sample.

Coders will be appointed by NFER to undertake the coding of the separate coding exercises.

Coders will be required to attend a training event in person. Following the training event, coding will be carried out at home using NFER’s online marking system (OSC). Coders will be assigned to teams and will be supported by supervisory coders throughout the process. All coders must pass a standardisation exercise before progressing to the coding, and the quality of their coding will be audited and monitored throughout the coding period.

Coders must be able to commit to being available for the whole of the coding period.

For dates and detailed information by role, including selection criteria, please review the Coder recruitment information.

A full breakdown of payment rates for all roles can be found in the Coder recruitment information.

The security of the test materials is paramount. All selected coders are required to sign a confidentiality agreement before attending the training session to pledge that their knowledge of the content of the tests will remain confidential. They are also asked to identify any conflicts of interests in schools and examination boards and inform NFER if, subsequently, they are approached by anyone in any regard in connection with their coding of the materials.

All successful coders are required to provide proof of valid basic or enhanced DBS certification, issued in the last three years. Applicants who do not have valid DBS certification will be provided with a link to the application and will need to obtain a certificate, at their cost.

All successful applicants are required to provide proof of right to work in the UK (if not already provided to NFER).
