Education and employment trajectories into the tech workforce

NFER is undertaking research to investigate education and employment trajectories into the tech workforce on behalf of the Hg Foundation.

The aim of this research is to gain a greater understanding of the tech jobs that employers recruit for, the skills and qualifications required, and trends over time.

We are looking for tech employers and employers in other sectors which recruit for tech departments/roles to take part in the research. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Suzanne Straw, NFER Research Director.

This research project includes focus groups and interviews, an employer survey and quantitative analysis of secondary data.

The research will involve taking part in an online focus group of around 90 minutes, an interview of around 30-45 minutes, or completing a survey.

By taking part in this research, you will help NFER and the Hg Foundation gain a greater understanding of tech recruitment, including trends over time and the skills and qualifications that are needed. The findings will inform Hg Foundation’s future grant making and ensure the projects it supports are preparing people well for future opportunities.

The research is taking place between June 2024 and December 2025. The focus group discussions and interviews have been completed, and once the employer survey has been administered in June/July 2025, analysis of secondary data will take place.

If you have any additional questions about the research, please contact Suzanne Straw, NFER Research Director.
