The aim of the research is to understand skills gaps and mismatches in priority sectors within selected case-study areas in England. This information will provide an evidence base that enables government to target interventions, refine funding allocations, and shape policies to better align training provision with current and future labour market needs.
Representatives from employers and training providers (further education colleges, higher education institutions and independent training providers) will be invited to take part in the study. They will be based in four case-study areas: Greater Manchester; West Midlands; Bristol/West of England; and Oxford-Cambridge corridor (with East of England). Participants will be recruited by Acumen Fieldwork who NFER are partnering with on this project.
This qualitative research project will combine desk research, focus groups with employers and training providers, and interviews with individuals with an overarching understanding of the skills needs and provision within their local area/sector.
Focus groups will take place online and last for up to 90 minutes.
Interviews will take place online and last for up to 45 minutes.
Focus groups and interviews are expected to take place in February 2026.
By taking part you will be helping to contribute to the understanding of skills needs and mismatches in different areas and sectors which will help inform government policy and funding decisions.
Focus group participants will receive a financial incentive as a thank you for their time. Details will be provided during recruitment.
January 2026 to April 2026
