Education Select Committee oral evidence session: Government proposals for compulsory maths to age 18

On 7th February 2023, NFER’s School Workforce Lead, Jack Worth, appeared in front of the Education Select Committee as part of their inquiry into the Prime Minister’s proposal for compulsory maths from ages 16-18. Jack provided evidence to the Committee on the current school workforce shortages and the implications of the teacher recruitment and retention challenges on the policy.
Jack also presented research from international studies, which compares the UK with other countries in terms of maths attainment, and pointed to NFER’s research that shows that 12% of maths hours are already taught by non-specialist maths teachers.
