Future of Post-16 Qualifications

28 July 2022

On 12th July, NFER’s Research Director Lisa Morrison-Coulthard appeared in front of the House of Commons Education Select Committee as part of their ongoing inquiry into the Future of Post-16 Qualifications. Lisa was joined by colleagues from the Association of Colleges, the Federation of Awarding Bodies, NCFE and Natspec.

The discussion focussed around the delivery and effectiveness of changes to Level 3 qualifications, particularly with regards to the introduction of T Levels. The skills gained from A Levels and T Levels, as well as routes to professional progression, was discussed, with both Lisa and the Chair of the Committee, Robert Halfon MP, highlighting NFER’s Skills Imperative project.

Key Findings

Wider discussions focussed on alternative qualifications, such as a 15-18 baccalaureate system, and the take-up of apprenticeships, which allowed Lisa to highlight NFER’s recent research into accessing apprenticeships.
