Surveys of the reading standards of pupils in Northern Ireland aged 8, 11 and 14 were carried out in May 1996 for the Department of Education in Northern Ireland. The aims of the study were to estimate the level of reading attainment of the three age groups studies, and to provide results which could be compared with those of previous surveys, particularly the Northern Ireland survey of 1993. For the first time, pupils aged 14 were also asked to complete a questionnaire on their attitudes to reading.
