Sixth Form Options: Post-compulsory Education in Maintained Schools
01 May 1996
This book reports the findings of a major research project undertaken by NFER to discover the impact of changes on sixth forms in maintained schools. The views of teachers, students and LEAs were sought via a questionnaire survey, a telephone survey, and fieldwork in more than 30 schools. The 'post-16 marketplace' emerged as a dominant issue, so the report examines
- evidence of, and reasons for, the growth in competition between schools and colleges
- the effect of competition on collaboration, course provision and student choice.
Detailed descriptions of seven actual sixth forms exemplify the diversity of post-16 provision now available in maintained schools. This book will be of interest to schools (particularly senior managers and teachers with sixth form responsibilities), LEAs and all with an interest in post-16 education.
