Ethnic diversity in England’s teacher workforce

NFER has been awarded a Nuffield Foundation grant to investigate ethnic disparities in England’s teacher workforce.

This research aims to assess the ethnic representativeness of the ITT sector as a whole and contextualise observed ethnic disparities in ITT acceptance, retention and outcomes.

We are collecting data from accredited ITT providers and lead partners in England.

This is part of a broader research project, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, investigating ethnic disparities in the education workforce. The research focuses on representation, progression barriers, pay gaps, and evaluation of an intervention to improve diversity.

We are collecting aggregate data on ITT staff ages and ethnicities from ITT providers.

By taking part in this research project, you will contribute to the evidence base on ethnic disparities in the teacher workforce. The findings will assist policymakers and practitioners to act to achieve a more ethnically diverse workforce.

The research runs from July 2026 – April 2028.

All ITT providers will receive an email from NFER inviting them to take part in the data collection in November 2026. Providers do not need to sign up in advance.

Please email [email protected] if you have any further questions.
