The aim of this study for the Education Endowment Foundation is to investigate current strategies used by schools to manage teacher workload and their impact on the recruitment and retention of teachers.

The research will take place between May and October 2023 and includes the following activities:

  • A desk review of literature to understand current practice and policy on managing teacher workload.
  • A practitioner survey.
  • Interviews with teachers and leaders.

The survey will focus on the prevalence of various workload management strategies, the purpose and perceived efficacy of current strategies and implementation barriers and facilitators.

Interviews with a small number of teachers and leaders will focus on their experience of workload reduction strategies, why and how these have been implemented in their own schools, perceptions of effectiveness and suitability for wider adoption among schools serving large proportions of disadvantaged pupils.
