What are the purposes and aims of the project?
The aim of the evaluation is to assess the efficacy of the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc programme. It will explore the programme’s impact on teachers’ knowledge and confidence in teaching phonics, reading and writing, and their participation in literacy continuous professional development (CPD). It will also use pupils' assessment outcomes to establish whether there is any difference in attainment in schools who have received the programme, versus schools who have not.
Who is sponsoring NFER to carry out this work?
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
How have schools been selected to take part?
The schools taking part in the programme have been recruited by Ruth Miskin Training. NFER, the programme’s evaluators have identified and are recruiting a comparison group of schools.
Do schools have to take part?
Participation in this evaluation is voluntary.
What does taking part involve?
Some staff involved in delivery of the programme will complete a baseline and a follow-up online survey to measure any change in knowledge and confidence in teaching phonics, reading and writing, following the intervention. Comparison schools will also be asked to complete a short survey during the 2022 summer term.
During the summer term 2022, we will ask schools to provide their year 1 (within 2021/22 academic year) phonic screen check scores.
How will NFER use and protect the data collected?
Files received from schools are encrypted and saved to a secure server at the NFER. The pupil information provided will be linked with the National Pupil Database (held by the Department for Education) and other official records. Please note that no individual schools or children will be identified in any reports arising from the research.
NFER have robust procedures in place to make sure that we comply with the increased governance and accountability requirements of GDPR. The privacy notices for this evaluation, which can be found at the top of this webpage, sets out how we comply with the data protection principles and how schools, teachers and pupils/parents can exercise their rights.
