Peter Rudd, Pauline Benefield, Mark Rickinson

01 February 2004

This report presents the findings from a General Teaching Council for England (GTC) initiated study aimed at identifying and charting current thinking on the future of teaching and learning through an examination of documentary and organisational evidence. Criteria for the selection of documents and key organisations are outlined, together with a list of the types of organisations chosen and the methodology used. The report is structured with theme-based chapters except for two and three which provide a basis for the substantive chapters which follow. These are: teachers' roles and skills; support staff; learners and learning; inclusion and inequalities; the curriculum; information and communication technology; training and professional development; assessment and accountability; leadership and management; partnerships and the community. Conclusions are detailed and discuss key themes, commonalties and differences, gaps in the literature and suggestions for ways forward.
