Future of Tutoring Research
NFER is carrying out some research for the Department for Education (DfE) on the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) and the future of tutoring in schools (regardless of whether schools have participated in the NTP or not). The NTP has been an important part of the Government’s Covid-19 recovery response, providing schools with funding to spend on targeted tuition support for pupils who were hit hardest by the disruption caused by the pandemic.
The aim is to explore participating schools’ experiences of the NTP over its lifespan (2020/21 to 2023/24), non-participating schools’ reasons for not taking part, and plans across all schools for tutoring provision in the future. The findings will inform policy on the future of tutoring.
How to take part in this research
All state schools in England will be invited to take part in an online survey in the autumn term 2023. Schools which have participated in the NTP at any point since its inception in 2020/21, as well as schools which have not participated in the NTP at all, will be invited to respond. NFER will subsequently carry out interviews with some survey respondents to explore their views in more depth (November 2023-January 2024).
